Great things have been happening at Gard Vintners, but they are going to get even better. Karen Bach, the tasting room manager here in Ellensburg, is working her magic and expanding Gard to include different wines, new menu items, and opening up an adjacent room to handle more customers. Karen is keeping with the mission of Gard Vintners which is to capture and bottle unique characteristics of the land that they farm, with 100% estate-grown sustainability in the heart of Washington’s Royal Slope. The winery was founded in 2006 by Josh and Lisa Lawrence who have farmed the royal slope vineyard for more than 55 years. Gard Vintners has three other locations in Walla Walla, Woodinville, and the Guard Public House in Royal City.

Karen joined the Gard team in 2013 as a tasting room specialist and was promoted to Tasting Room Manager for the Ellensburg location in 2017. Her background was being a bartender where she worked at the Roadhouse, Buzz Inn, and Swift Waters event center. She honed her customer service skills at these places and still continues to put the customer first at the Gard.

She moved to Ellensburg in 1997 and earned her Bachelor’s degree from CWU in Law and Justice. She met and married her husband Jeremy, a local water well driller. Karen is busy with her two daughters and enjoys traveling with her family. She and her husband truly enjoy traveling around doing wine tasting tours in an effort to learn as much as she can about wines.

2020 was difficult for all businesses and the Gard was no exception.  Karen gives her success during that difficult time to her wine club members who help support Gard through their purchases. Karen likes to support local vendors and with the expansion of the tasting room, she incorporated local contractors to do the upgrades.

The Gard house policy is that everyone is welcomed and Karen and her staff are accepting of all “flavors” of people. “We are respectful of all individuals and we are shown the same respect”, stated Karen.
