One of the most exciting features of summer time is taking a vacation. Vacations are the highlight of my childhood summer memories. The opportunity to visit someplace new can be a rewarding experience. If Ellensburg is on your destination list for this summer, or if you will be passing through, here are some components that will make you fall in love with this charming town.

History

If you are wondering where to start your Ellensburg adventure, looking at the history is the perfect place. The Kittitas County Historical Museum, located at the Caldwell building, is a non-profit dedicated to preserving materials that help illustrate the history of Kittitas County. The museum has a display of Native American Bag and Basket Collections, an Antique Automobile Display, an Antique Doll Collection, Military History items and so much more! If that is not enough, admission is also free. Come discover the rich history of Kittitas County.

For those who like to discover history in artwork, the Clymer Museum of Art is a great place to discover the illustrations of early Western America. The Clymer Museum features artist John Ford Clymer, who illustrated the epic history of our Western frontier in his paintings. This would be an exciting way to experience the pioneer spirit.

Activities

Ellensburg has just about every outdoor activity you could imagine. Biking, bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, parks, vineyard and winery tours and wildlife viewing are all a part of the Ellensburg outdoor experience. There is also excellent fly fishing in the Kittitas County. The Yakima River is a fly fisherman’s dream for catching Steelhead, Cutthroat and Rainbow trout.

Troutwater Outfitters offers professional, guided fly fishing tours that guarantee a safe, fun and successful day on the river. They also offer a variety of supplies and shuttle service. While you are shopping around downtown, be sure to stop by their shop on North Pearl Street and book an exciting adventure with them.

If you plan on hiking, camping or river floating, Mountain High Sports is a fantastic place to visit. They are located on 4th Avenue in downtown Ellensburg. The staff is very friendly and they have a wide range of recreational merchandise. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for high quality gear with a great selection.

One of the most relaxing experiences of summer is reading a good book outside. There are a few wonderful bookstores in the downtown that are sure to have the right fit for you. Pearl Street Books and Gifts and Brick Road Books will have exactly what you want need to find your new summer read.
